Common E-commerce Interview Questions

Without further ado, here are some tips for acing an e-commerce interview:

  • Research the company, industry, and specific position.
  • Practice your responses to common interview questions.
  • Review any relevant work or project experience.
  • Highlight relevant skills and qualifications.
  • Be confident in your abilities.

5 Tips for acing an e-commerce interview

With these tips in mind, you'll be well on your way to landing your dream e-commerce job.

Tell me about yourself and why you'd like to work in e-commerce.

Tell me about yourself” is one of the most hated questions among job applicants, mostly because of its vagueness.

But you can use this interview question to your advantage and highlight some relevant accomplishments and experience, your motivation and strengths.

It's no secret that first impressions count. A study by the British psychological society shows that 30% of employers make their decision whether or not to hire the interview candidate within the first 5 minutes. So you'll want to score points on this common opening e-commerce interview question to increase your chances of getting hired right out of the gate.

Mention skills that you think might be attractive to hear to the hiring manager. Just to give you some ideas, you can talk about how you can handle challenging projects, provide excellent customer service and stay on top of the e-commerce development and trends in this fast-growing industry.

Here's a sample answer:

I'm a results-driven, analytical employee with a passion for e-commerce and innovation. I want to work in e-commerce mainly because it's an industry where I get to see the results of my job relatively quickly. Seeing positive results further motivates me to improve myself. Secondly, I love how dynamic and stimulating the e-commerce industry is. Learning new things quickly has always been one of my strengths. I also have experience managing different projects. As a result, I can work well with teams and clients.

Why do you want to work for (insert company name) in this e-commerce position?

The hiring manager will want to see that you researched the company and that you're attracted to their particular company culture and work environment.

I researched your company before applying for this position, and I love your products and services. It seems that you genuinely provide good value and care about your customers. I believe these are essential aspects for any e-commerce business to succeed. I'd love to bring my skills and knowledge (insert your relevant skills) to the table in order to help your company achieve its goals and continue to thrive.

How does e-commerce work?

A consumer buys something from a website, which sends their transaction over secure channels to an online server where it can be processed quickly and without hassle or delay.

What are the main benefits of e-commerce compared to traditional commerce?

Thanks to e-commerce, customers can enjoy the increased convenience of shopping from the comfort of their homes with no location restrictions. It's fast, easy and available 24/7. The benefit for e-commerce businesses is getting access to a worldwide customer base and the potential to increase revenue and sales in a significant way.

What are the possible drawbacks and challenges of e-commerce?

One of the critical challenges facing the e-commerce industry is competition from both small and large businesses. E-commerce companies have to stay on top of trends, maintain high levels of customer service, and constantly improve their offerings to compete with other international companies. Another challenge is the prevention of fraud. It's super important to ensure secure transactions.

Explain briefly the B2B, B2C, C2B and C2C e-commerce concepts.

B2B (Business to Business)

In B2B, companies make transactions with each other. For example, companies sell their products and services to wholesalers, distributors, etc.

B2C (Business to Consumer)

B2C is when businesses sell to their customers. Transactions are done via shopping cart software.

C2B (Consumer to Business)

In this e-commerce model, a company buys goods or services from individuals, either directly or through an intermediary. An intermediary would connect the business to the individuals. For example, a photographer may offer stock images to businesses on stock photography platforms. Simply put, a C2B - Consumer to Business describes a business model where consumers deliver value to a business rather than vice-versa.

Some other typical examples of C2B models are affiliate programs or data sharing. Companies may ask bloggers to promote a new product and review it for their readers, or ask for surveys to collect data from consumers, etc.

C2C (Consumer to Consumer)

These kinds of online transactions are usually done between individuals. Payments can be processed via PayPal or Stripe.

What are some of the e-commerce platforms that you purchase from?

Top online store is undoubtedly Amazon. Other big ones are eBay, Apple, Walmart, and Home Depot. I've purchased from all of them, but I mostly use Amazon.

Tell me about a time when you successfully solved a long-standing problem.

One time, I was tasked with improving the checkout process for our company's website. After doing some research and speaking to users of our site, I realized that there were a lot of issues with our current software - it was confusing, slow, and cumbersome.

To address these problems, I implemented many changes to create more positive customer experience. The changes included simplifying the checkout process, making it more intuitive and streamlined. Through these changes, I significantly reduced the number of abandoned carts and increased conversions on our site, ultimately leading to a significant boost in sales for our company.

Overall, my experience as a web developer and a user of e-commerce platforms has given me a well-rounded perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing businesses in the e-commerce space.

How do you see e-commerce and digital marketing changing in the future?

With the rapid growth of e-commerce and digital marketing in recent years, I believe these trends will continue to expand over time. As more consumers transition from brick-and-mortar stores to online stores, businesses will need to stay on top of new technologies and trends to remain competitive.

One area where I see a lot of potential is the use of artificial intelligence, implementing more video content and focusing on digital marketing on social media platforms. E-commerce companies are increasingly leveraging these technologies to gain valuable insights into consumer behavior, improve their marketing strategies, and boost sales.

Overall, I believe that e-commerce will continue to grow and thrive as consumers turn more frequently to online shopping for all their needs. Whether through cutting-edge technologies or traditional marketing strategies, businesses must adapt and evolve to keep up with changing consumer demands. And I'm looking forward to being a part of this exciting journey!

How do you keep your e-commerce knowledge up to date?

To keep my e-commerce knowledge up to date, I regularly read industry blogs and publications, attend conferences and networking events, and engage with other professionals in the field.

I also leverage online resources such as online courses, webinars, podcasts, and videos to stay on top of new trends in the world of e-commerce.

Overall, staying up to date on the latest trends and developments in e-commerce is an ongoing process that requires research, networking, and self-education. And I believe that by constantly expanding my knowledge and skills, I am well-positioned to succeed in this dynamic and ever-changing industry.

What are your strengths?

I'd say that one of my main strengths is my ability to think strategically and analytically. I have a good attention for detail and can use data and research to identify patterns, trends, and opportunities within the e-commerce industry.

In addition, I am highly organized and systematic in my approach to work. Being organized allows me to manage multiple projects and tasks while maintaining high levels of efficiency.

What are your salary expectations in this e-commerce position?

Questions about your salary expectations can be a bit tricky. Here are some diplomatic ways to answer this question if you don't want to lowball yourself but also not lose the chance of getting hired because of setting the bar too high for the company's budget.

Sample 1: Before I answer, I'd like to ask what you typically pay someone with my experience and education in this position.

Sample 2: I need more information about the position before I can begin to discuss the salary. Can you tell me what your budget for this position is?

Sample 3: This opportunity is valuable to me, so I'm always willing to look at the bigger picture and be somewhat flexible.

Tell me about a time when you went over and above for a customer or a client.

When I worked as a customer representative for an e-commerce company, a customer had issues with one of our products and couldn't get it to work properly. After trying several different things, I realized that their operating system might have some compatibility issues with our product.

So I reached out to our software engineering team and worked with them to find a solution, ultimately helping the customer get their product up and running smoothly. It was a challenging problem that required creativity and persistence on my part, but in the end, it made a big difference for our customers. I am always willing to go the extra mile to deliver top-quality service.

How would you create a positive e-commerce experience with customers and ensure online customer retention?

To create a positive e-commerce experience with customers, I would start by focusing on understanding their needs and expectations. I would also place a strong emphasis on delivering high-quality products and services and providing responsive and personalized customer support.

Another key factor in ensuring online customer retention is to invest in marketing efforts that help build brand awareness and trust. Increasing brand awareness might include utilizing social media channels, partnering with influencers, or creating engaging content that resonates with the needs of the target audience.

Interview Questions for Specific E-commerce Companies

Now that I tackled the common e-commerce interview questions, let's look at the interview questions for some specific e-commerce companies.

Stripe Company's Culture and Company Overview

Stripe has a reputation for being one of the fastest-growing tech companies. The company provides online payment processing services and software and has headquarters in San Francisco, USA. Stripe is known to have a fantastic working culture and a high standard for hiring its engineers.

Stripe's company culture is fast-paced and dynamic. Thousands of companies, including Amazon, Shopify, Under Armour, Zoom, and Slack, use Stripe software to accept online payments from anywhere globally.

Online payment

Stripe's ambitious mission is evident in its statement "to increase the GDP of the internet."  That said, the company has a collaborative atmosphere (sometimes described as friendly competition).

The salary at Stripe for software engineering positions is very lucrative, often starting at 200k a year, making it a desirable place to work.

The list of benefits when you work for Stripe is also pretty extensive, including perks such as monthly wellness reimbursement, 10-day free therapy sessions or a $500 education stipend per year and more.

Stripe Interview Questions

Stripe has a reputation for attracting and retaining top engineering talent. Staying on top of cutting-edge technology is reflected in the high standards they set for their hiring process.

Stripe interviews are more practical rather than academic. It's no secret that Stripe cares more about your results than your resume.

Stripe has a reputation for attracting and retaining top engineering talent. Staying on top of cutting-edge technology is reflected in the high standards they set for their hiring process. The interview includes rigorous technical and coding assessments, plus the evaluation of soft skills such as solid teamwork, attention to detail and problem-solving.

The entire Stripe interview process can take anywhere between 2-4 weeks and it consists of 3 phases - a recruiter screen, 1-2 technical phone screens and an on-site interview.

The recruiter screen phase ensures that your resume and experience make you a good fit for Stripe. In this stage, the recruiter will also identify which software engineering position for Stripe is most suitable for you based on your skills and knowledge. This phase of interview screening is pretty informal.

Here is the list of main criteria to be eligible for a software engineer position at Stripe:

  • Education in computer science, engineering, or equivalent technical experience.
  • Knowledge of the Stripe API.
  • Knowledge of at least one programming language that Stripe supports (PHP, Java, Go, Node.js, Python, Ruby, and .NET).
  • Understanding of the required data protection and security measures needed to handle private financial data.
  • Knowledge of the best practices when it comes to the handling of financial information and processing transactions.

Phone screening usually consists of algorithm and data structures interview questions. Similar questions will come up again in an on-site interview. To ace this part of your interview, brush up your knowledge in the following areas:

  • Databases
  • Hash Tables
  • Core Data Structures
  • Graph and Sorting Algorithms
  • Recursion and Dynamic programming

If you make it to an on-site interview, it's time to congratulate yourself!

There are five types of questions commonly asked during this on-site interview phase.

1. Coding and Algorithm Questions

You'll be asked coding question to solve a complex algorithm in response to a complex problem.

2. System Design Questions

This involves whiteboarding and creating complex designs for problems.

3. Debugging Questions

You'll be given a piece of code, and you'll be asked to figure out the solution to why it's not working.

Side Note: What's more important than focusing on fixing the bug is focusing on communicating with an interviewer about how you're going about solving this problem. First and foremost, the interviewer wants to know your thought process. In other words, how you think about the issue and use your reasoning to find the right solution.

4. Integration Questions

These questions are all about using Stripe APIs. In this question, you'll be given an API and a sample code. You'll be asked questions about how the integration works and about ways to improve that integration.  To prepare for this type of interview questions, you can go to Stripe documentation and look through their APIs and see how they articulate it to get a sense of how it works.

5. Typical Behavioral Interview Questions

This final round would be an interview with your potential manager. Unlike in coding interview, these questions will be more behavioral in nature and more about your fit with the role, the company and the team.

5 types of questions commonly asked during the on-site interview phase

Why would you like to work for Stripe?

I'm passionate about programming, and I believe that Stripe is at the forefront of this industry. I'd be thrilled to join a team of talented engineers who are constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible in online payments and financial transactions. I also love Stripe's strong company culture, which values collaboration and innovation above all else.

What are your interests as a software engineer?

I'm interested in writing clean, efficient code that solves real business problems. In particular, I love working with complex systems and finding ways to improve them through better design and automation. Additionally, I enjoy staying up-to-date on the latest trends in technology to continue developing my skills as a software engineer. Overall, I'd be excited to bring my experience and skills to Stripe and help the company achieve even greater success in the future.

How do you expect to grow in your software engineer career?

I believe that success in this field requires an ongoing commitment to professional development, and I am dedicated to continually expanding my knowledge of cutting-edge technologies and best practices. Additionally, I enjoy working with other engineers on collaborative projects, so I plan to seek out opportunities for mentorship and help my colleagues grow in the future. Overall, I am confident I can thrive as a software engineer at Stripe with my passion for coding, dedication to learning, and collaborative spirit.

Tell me about a project you've worked on in the past that you're really proud of.

One project that stands out to me was when I worked on an e-commerce platform for a small startup. The project involved building a website from scratch using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. It required a lot of problem-solving, creativity, and working collaboratively with other developers to ensure the final product met all customer's requirements. It was really rewarding to see our hard work pay off.

Tell me about a time when you had to resolve a difficult situation within the team.

One situation that comes to mind is when I worked on a project with several other developers. There were disagreements about the best way to write specific code (give a more specific example), causing a lot of frustration and tension within the team. To resolve this issue, I worked closely with my teammates to find a compromise that everyone could agree on. This experience taught me the importance of communication and collaboration in software engineering.

Tell me about a time you had a different opinion from a team member. How did you resolve it?

One time I was working on a project with another developer, and we disagreed about the best approach to particular coding challenges (insert more specific coding problem). At first, we both felt very strongly about our own opinions. Still, after discussing it further and considering each other's perspectives, we eventually came to the most effective solution that made the most sense. The moral of the story: exchanging different opinions can lead to better ideas and solutions.

How do you handle negative feedback?

I believe constructive criticism is essential to growth and improvement, so I always appreciate the feedback. When receiving negative feedback, I try to remain open-minded and reflect on areas where I can improve.

Amazon company culture

Amazon doesn't need an introduction. From a small e-commerce store that sold books in 1994, it grew into the largest e-commerce platform in the world, with over 41 different subsidiaries and brands.

Amazon SQL interview questions

Whether you're planning to apply for a business analyst, data analyst, or data scientist job position, you will follow a somewhat similar interview format. The Amazon SQL interview has 3 phases: Recruiter Phone Screen, Technical Assessment and On-site job interview.

3 Stages of the Amazon SQL interview

Side note: Amazon only hires highly qualified job seekers with at least three years of industry experience in data analysis, data modeling, advanced business analytics, and other related fields.

1st Stage: Recruiter screen

Recruiter Phone screening follows standard introductory interview questions with an HR representative after submitting your application. The interview lasts about 45 minutes, and the internal recruiter will assess your background, skill sets, and work experience related to the position to determine whether you're the right fit for the role.

Job interview

Be prepared for some leadership questions with specific examples of how you applied those leadership qualities in your previous jobs or life.

Amazon has clearly defined leadership principles. Here are some of them:

  • Customer obsession - the customer comes first, and leaders do their best to gain and retain customer trust
  • Ownership - leaders keep the bigger picture in mind and take ownership
  • Invent and simplify - look for new ideas and keep them simple
  • Are right, a lot - leaders have strong judgements and good instinct
  • Learn and be curious - leaders always seek possibilities for growth and improvement
  • Hire and develop the best - leaders recognize talent and encourage talented people to take their role in coaching others
  • Insist on the highest standards - leaders constantly raise the bar and maintain high standards and quality of services and products
  • Think big - think outside the box

2nd stage: Technical assessment

The most commonly tested skills in the Amazon SQL technical assessment are SQL, Python and Analytics.

Remember that your logical thinking and analysis might be sufficient to show your knowledge and skills even if you can't find a solution to a specific problem.

3rd Stage: On-site job interview

The final interview consists of 5 or 6 one-on-one interviews, and you can expect both technical questions about SQL and behavioral questions.

Examples of Technical Amazon SQL Interview Questions

SQL interview questions are the main requirements for both data scientists and data analysts positions at Amazon. Many interview questions require writing solutions using SQL (Structured Query Language).

SQL interview questions are the main requirements for both data scientists and data analysts positions at Amazon. Many interview questions require writing solutions using SQL (Structured Query Language). Therefore if you're interested in those specific positions, you should brush up on your SQL knowledge before an Amazon interview.

Here are some examples of technical Amazon SQL interview questions:

  • Explain what a DISTINCT clause is.
  • Explain the difference between a UNION and a UNION ALL.
  • How do Window Functions work?
  • Explain the difference between a primary and a foreign key.
  • Tell me the difference between LEAD and LAG.
  • Which functions in SQL do you use the most?
  • What are OLAP cubes?
  • Explain data normalization and non-normalization.
  • What is cascading referential integrity?
  • What is the difference between linear and logistic regression with specific examples?
  • Explain independent variables, and what would you do if you have three independent variables in your model and no dependent variable?
  • Write an equation for the multivariance or multiple regression model.
  • Given a sample with n observations, how could you test a hypothesis?
  • What are the Assumptions of ANOVA?
  • What test would you use for a small sample?
  • What is the null hypothesis?
  • What are type 1 and type 2 errors?
  • What is the probability of having ten consecutive numbers in ascending order out of 100 numbers?
  • How would you merge two tables in SQL?
  • Write a function to calculate the Fibonacci code in any of these languages (VBA, Python, Java).

Examples of Behavioral Amazon Interview Questions

If you apply for a tech role at Amazon, besides technical interview questions, you’ll be asked a set of behavioral questions. Although the behavioral questions may not seem difficult compared to technical Amazon SQL interview questions, it would be a mistake to overlook them.

At Amazon, employees live and breathe the 16 leadership principles. Hiring managers use open-ended questions to screen if the candidates align with these principles and are, therefore, a right fit for Amazon's company culture.

Here are some sample questions:

Tell me about a time when you put the customer first.

When I was working at a small e-commerce startup. At the time, we were experiencing a lot of growth and struggling with increasing demand for our products. I noticed that many customers had difficulty finding the right product on our website, and they would often get frustrated and leave without making a purchase.

To address this issue, I worked closely with my team to create a new customer journey map highlighting different product categories. I then led user testing sessions to understand better how customers were navigating the site. Finally, I used this information to improve our product pages and search functionality. Thanks to these efforts, we improved customer satisfaction and increased sales by over 20%.

Tell me about a time when you went the extra mile.

I'll give you an example from a time when I was working as a data analyst for an e-commerce company (insert name of the company). In addition to my regular duties, I took it upon myself to learn more about the marketing side of the business and familiarize myself with the different marketing channels the company was using. This allowed me to better understand how our customers were engaging with our brand, and I could provide more actionable insights on areas where we could improve.

Tell me about when you changed your approach to avoid missing a deadline.

When I was working on a data analytics project for my company, we were under a tight deadline. We had many different stakeholders who needed access to our data. However, it quickly became apparent that our existing approach would not be able to handle the number of requests that we were getting.

As a result, I had to adapt my approach and develop new ways to streamline the process. This involved identifying bottlenecks in our existing systems and making recommendations for improvements based on this feedback. Through these efforts, we could meet our deadline and deliver high-quality data that was useful for all stakeholders.

How do you handle conflict at work?

When I encounter conflict at work, I always prioritize remaining calm and understanding the other person's perspective before being understood. First, I try to uncover underlying issues or concerns that may be contributing to the conflict. Then it's easier to find a resolution.

Tell me about an accomplishment that you're proud of.

One accomplishment I am particularly proud of is when I successfully led a data analytics project for my previous company. The project involved working with multiple stakeholders and delivering high-quality results on time. Through this project, I demonstrated my ability to effectively manage complex projects while collaborating with others and driving results in a fast-paced environment. (This is just a generic sample answer. The most specific you’re, the better.)

Uber company culture

Uber was founded in 2009. Since then, Uber has quickly become a leading player in ridesharing and transportation, making it one of the most popular companies in the world. It offers an innovative platform for drivers and riders to connect that uses the latest AI technologies.

  2. On-site or Online Technical Interview Rounds
  3. One System Design Round
  4. HR Round

Interview phases in Uber technical roles

Technical interview questions will be centered around solving technical problems and writing functional codes.

I'll focus mainly on HR round and behavioral questions designed to determine whether you're the right fit for the company's working culture.

Why do you want to work for Uber?

I'd like to work for Uber because I see you as an innovative company that is changing the world with your services. Through your services and platforms, you have transformed how people travel and order food and products. Another reason why I want to work for Uber is because of your ambitious plans, as I’m an ambitious individual myself.

What do you know about Uber?

A great way to stand out during your interview is to impress your interviewer with how much you know about the company. Because let's face it, most people don't make an effort to do their company research.

Uber started as Ubercab in 2009. The company's founder was frustrated by spending $800 on hiring a private car, which gave him the idea to start Uber. Uber is a technology company based in San Francisco that offers multiple services in over 60 countries worldwide, including delivering food, packages, ridesharing and electric bike and scooter rentals.

As far as I know, Uber is currently focused on transitioning to zero-emission vehicles by 2040. Ensuring safe travel for their customers is one of their top priorities.

What are the most important skills needed to work at Uber?

One of the most essential skills to work at Uber is excellent customer service. Without it, people won't use Uber services or recommend it to others. Uber employees need an innovative approach to creating products and services and resilience paired with good problem-solving skills to overcome any challenges that may occur.

Other important skills are collaboration, maintaining high standards, communication and interpersonal skills.

Tell me about a time you handled a disagreement with a coworker.

In my last job, a colleague disagreed with me on how to complete a particular task. (insert a specific task). To prevent a heated argument, I took some time to understand their point of view and then explained my position clearly. We tried both methods and then chose the most effective one. This way we were able to finish the task on time. Whenever there is a disagreement, I keep it professional and ensure that the task gets done above all else.

Why do you think you would be a good fit for Uber?

I have a lot of experience working both alone and as part of a team. My core strengths include that I'm a fast learner. I am also highly organized and always willing to go the extra mile to get the job done. I believe I would be a great fit for Uber because I am passionate about innovation and technology and have a proven track record of delivering high-quality results in fast-paced environments. Additionally, I'm committed to ensuring customer satisfaction.

What are your strengths and weaknesses?

It's a good idea to list 3 or 4 strengths and one weakness that isn’t match to the job description.

My strengths include my customer service skills, ability to collaborate and innovative approach to problem-solving. My weakness is that I'm not good at giving people honest feedback. I tend to be too nice instead of direct to avoid upsetting them. However, I understand that the ugly truth is sometimes necessary to improve performance, efficiency and results.

Tell me about a time when you successfully managed a complex project or campaign. What challenges did you face along the way, and how did you overcome them?

For example, I regularly attend conferences and workshops focusing on emerging marketing techniques and technologies. By staying on top of the latest marketing trends, I can bring fresh ideas and insights to my work, which ultimately helps me drive better results for my company.

What are the biggest challenges facing e-commerce marketers today, and how would you approach them?

There are many challenges facing e-commerce marketers today, ranging from increasing competition to rapidly evolving technology and consumer preferences. To effectively tackle these challenges, I believe it is important to focus on developing strategies that are data-driven and targeted toward specific audiences. Additionally, staying up-to-date with the latest marketing trends and technologies.

How do you evaluate the performance of your marketing campaigns, and what metrics do you typically track?

I use many different metrics to evaluate the performance of my marketing campaigns, including website traffic, conversion rates, and customer engagement. Additionally, I pay close attention to data on social media performance and search engine rankings.

When it comes to an e-commerce website, typically rely on tools such as Google Analytics to help me track these key metrics. I also analyze and interpret the data collected from social media to make informed decisions about how to improve social media marketing strategies going forward.

Overall, I believe a strong focus on data-driven decision-making is critical for success in e-commerce marketing. I'm always looking for innovative ways to optimize my campaigns based on what data tell me.

Tell me about a time when you had to make difficult decisions or prioritize competing priorities. How did you handle these situations, and what was the outcome?

One time, I had to make a tough decision about which marketing channels would be the most effective for a particular client. The challenge involved evaluating different metrics, such as website traffic and conversion rates, as well as considering factors like budget constraints and competitive landscape.

Ultimately, I decided to focus on digital advertising campaigns to reach the target audience effectively. This approach paid off, and we saw significant increases in website traffic and conversions due to our efforts. I also put more focus on driving traffic from Pinterest, as that has proven to be a valuable resource for increasing traffic and e-commerce sales.
