Meditation Not About Being Perfect

How to Make Meditation Work For You

There has been a lot of talk about the benefits of meditation. While meditation can do wonders for your mental health, many people struggle to do it “the right way." But the fact is that there is no one “right way” to meditate. You don’t have to become a Buddhist monk.  You don’t have to meditate without a single thought for hours on end.  Here are some tips that will help you set up a habit of meditation.

If you want personalized guidance, book a time with a health coach or a wellness coach.

  1.  It doesn’t have to be perfect. Our minds are constantly thinking so it’s natural when you meditate to have thoughts. The best way to deal with these thoughts is to let them pass by without judgment. As you figure out what type of meditation works for you, you’ll find ways to quiet most of your thoughts.

  2. You can meditate in any position that feels comfortable. You don’t have to sit cross legged. Yes that is how Buddhist monks do it but they have been practicing their whole lives so it’s unrealistic to expect to be exactly like them. While this works fine for some it can be uncomfortable for those who just want to relax.  I like meditating while sitting in my LaZboy. You can even meditate while lying down in bed. Even if that ends up putting you to sleep on your first try, that’s ok too because your body may need the rest. Mediation should help you sleep better at night so eventually you may not be as tired.

  3. Having music without lyrics playing can help your mind rest.  It’s ok if you need some assistance in quieting your mind. Our minds are made to think, so it can be challenging to turn them off without any noise whatsoever. I personally like to listen to Japanese music. There’s a video on Youtube: 3 HOURS of the Best Traditional Japanese Music - Relaxing Music for Stress Relief and Healing   You can of course choose whatever music you're most comfortable with.

  4. Meditation tends to improve with practice. Tried meditating and it didn’t go well?  That’s ok. Meditation is not about being perfect. It’s about taking the time each day to quiet your mind and not only rest but also improve your mood and make you more compassionate. Many studies have shown that even beginners can change the structure of their brain in as little as 8 weeks if they practice meditation each day.  And everyone who meditated did it in their own way.
