The Advanced Strategic Thinking Program is designed to build every top leader's techniques of thinking strategically and making the right decisions under different circumstances, naturally. The five (5) core competencies that candidates on this program will on-board are:
1. Insight: the ability to assess and deeply understand any situation as the vital first step towards a decision
2. Foresight: the ability to exercise perceptual acuity, imagining and anticipating what lies ahead and modelling the impact of it all on the business
3. Judgment; the ability to exercise critical thinking, assess bottlenecks and practice trade-offs on constraints to get to make the right calls
4. Decision-making: the ability to analyse and synthesise outputs of the first three (3) to assess the decision options in any situation and eventually commit to a course of action
5. Reflection: the decision-modelling exercise post a decision by mapping every decision to the organisation in order to understand its full impact
The emphasis of the program is on "A way of thinking" not on the subject of strategy. Business schools and other leadership institutions of learning are good at teaching subjects but rarely if at all, help you to focus on how you think. You can be taught any subject at business school but thinking is a capability that needs coaching. The learning style of teaching is based on mastering concepts and principles that are developed and extensively explained in textbooks. Thinking on the other hand is an activity of the mind that is generated not by pre-developed concepts and principles but by curiosity and inquisition.
In this program you will interact with your coach on-line, from your work environment. You will receive an inventory of questions weekly about the real issues you are experiencing in your current role in your organisation. Answering the questions requires you to interact with your peers above and below your level and think across disciplines, functions and levels as well as consider the micro and macro external environment. Taken in totality, the questions are designed to entrench a way of thinking as a model you can ascribe to, follow and apply repeatedly as you make calls on the simplest to the most complex issues you face as a leader. Just like you have perfected your bicycle-riding method or your motor vehicle driving skills to a level where you do those activities without thinking, so is the need to develop a natural but effective decision-making model. Thinking strategically provides you with a basis for such a model.
