About me

The women I coach and teach yoga to find balance in their lives and their psyche; speak their truth, even if their voice shakes; and proudly take up physical, emotional, and sacred space.

I am grateful to offer services as a holistic Life, wellness, and spiritual coach and yoga, pilates, meditation and mindfulness teacher. My company is called tula soul (tula means "balance" in Sanskrit; "wind" in Finnish; and "poem" in the Philippines).

Clients can tell that I genuinely care about them, as I demonstrate curiosity, compassion, and empathy; as well as passion for my field. Helping others has been my goal since I was twelve years old and decided I would be a psychologist.

Which is exactly what I did. After starting my career as a psychologist in private practice, I am confident in my skills and ability to easily assess a client's current status and obstacles that may be impeding progress. I also know how to trust in both my own and my client's intuition, and when to steer coaching in a particular direction versus allowing the client to lead.

My clients and I work together to establish both short and long-term goals, and based on feedback I've received, they are amazed at how effective my coaching style is in helping them reach their goals. Clients say that they appreciate my candor and honesty, which is always delivered with compassion, humor, and gentle encouragement. I also offer extra resources and creative (optional) homework that clients can use between sessions.

Yoga/meditation (really the same thing) has been transformational in my life, so I am grateful to be able to teach the healing practice to my clients. My clients are often surprised to learn that they can do yoga, since the media portrays yoga as an exercise for the thin and bendy. In fact, yoga is for everyone, and there are modifications for all levels of fitness, flexibility and body type. Yoga is definitely not about appearance, weight loss or achieving a certain look; or, for that matter, achieving anything. That's why it's called a practice. Yoga is about being present, calming the fluctuations of the mind, and synchronizing breath to movement. The word yoga means "to yoke" or "union." In other words, it is about the union of individual consciousness with universal consciousness.

In terms of professional organizations, I am a member of the International Coaching Federation, MN Chapter; the Yoga Alliance (RYT-500, YACEP); the Yoga Specialists, whose goal is to spread the joy, healing, and power of yoga to as many people as possible, through an environment of accessibility, inclusivity, and respect; and the Yoga Service Council, which aims to make yoga and mindfulness community-centered, culturally-sensitive, and inclusive for all.

I am a strong advocate for social justice, and I volunteer for Humanize My Hoodie, a Minneapolis-based organization that works toward racial equality by educating, uplifting communities, and promote BIPOC art and artists.

Other organizations I belong to and support include: the Southern Poverty Law Center; Showing up for Racial Justice; Center for Mindful Self-Compassion; International Association of Trauma Professionals; Black Lives Matter; Shambala; Center for Victims of Torture; Saving Jane; and the Engaged Mindfulness Institute; and the Nonfiction Authors Association.

"When I was matched with Dr. Jo and read her bio, everything she had experience with and was interested in matched with everything I was looking for in a coach! We've had a few sessions so far, and I have never felt so comfortable with a therapist/coach right off the bat. I can tell she cares about me and my thoughts/feelings. She listens well, is able to give good advice and guidance. She doesn't just sugarcoat things and is real with me. Its nice to have a non-judgmental space to process and dove deeper into who I am and who I want to become. I am so thankful we connected, and I'm looking forward to working with her long term!"
