Healthy Habits for Teens Traditional health coaching approaches aren't always a good fit for teenagers and the specific issues and challenges they face. Healthy Habits for Teens focuses specifically on establishing healthy eating and exercise habits, nurturing positive body-image, and instilling the critical thinking skills necessary to navigate disordered diet culture. Not only do I have my own tween and teen daughters, I work with teens from all walks of life as part of the Teen Fit program at the Downtown Oakland YMCA, which has taught me a great deal about creating successful habit based programming for teens. My Healthy Habits for Teens program focuses on healthy behavior rather than weight, BMI or appearance. There are no weigh-ins, and in fact I actively discourage 'my kids' from weighing themselves (there's emergent scientific research showing that teens who self-weigh are at higher risk of depression and disordered eating). Instead, we work on consistency, balance and a logical and long-term approach to healthy behavior patterns. Parent participation is highly encouraged. I will keep you abreast of what we cover in our coaching session so you can reinforce it at home (although I don't go into specifics about our conversations unless I'm concerned for their safety - kids deserve SOME level of privacy!). For most of the kids I've worked with, parent participation is THE factor that predicts successful outcomes, so I really encourage my teen's parents to stay actively involved as part of the coaching process. While my Teen program covers many of the same topics as my other programs, my approach is slightly different, as teens simply think differently than adults. Some of the things we will cover: -goal setting -defining success -identifying barriers to success -creating strategies for overcoming barriers -becoming aware of self-talk -becoming aware of cultural and peer influences -creating strategies to build positive self-image -self-esteem building exercises -self-efficacy building -establishing healthy eating habits -establishing enjoyable exercise habits -improving self-awareness -improving critical thinking skills Weekly calls are 30 minutes with the teen and another 30 with the parent. We can meet via google hangouts, Skype, Facebook video or text, FaceTime, or gChat. I really enjoy working with teens, and am excited to offer this program to help parents foster healthy body image and health habits in their kids. Description:

Traditional health coaching approaches aren't always a good fit for teenagers and the specific issues and challenges they face.
