Stop your child becoming addicted to cigarettes

Despite an abundance of health warnings and the outrageous cost of tobacco products, smoking is still a key feature of many teenage lives. Once addicted, it is very difficult for a person to give up smoking.

One of the best things you can do for your teenager is to encourage them not to start. The most effective way to do this is not be too ‘preachy’. Instead, help them deal positively with peer pressure, the prime cause of smoking. By giving your children the self-belief and confidence to say no, you are indirectly helping them avoid being pressured into smoking.

Hi David, I'm raising two teenagers and I tell ya, every time I tell them not to do something, it makes them want to do it even more! You're very right in saying that parents shouldn't be too preachy because then it just turns into nagging and it won't really help.

I've done all I can to raise non smokers but although my kids are the kindest and most generous people I know, they are both smokers. I think at the end of the day, no matter what you do or say, kids will grow up and make their own life decisions. All I can say to parents out there is: dont sweat it.
